'The Pointers' 2007
At The Mansion, Werribee Park, Victoria.
Murray River Red Gum, galvanized steel, fencing wire
350 x 3000 x 3500 cm

Spheres of volatile energy frozen in space, the pointers are misaligned. They appear chaotic with imbalance, bowled off course by unseen force. Dead trees gathered from the edges of the parched Murray River, stacked in sections off the ground to season the material for household cooking and heating. Yet these stacks beckon us to incinerate them as whole effigies, the elemental urge in us to waste and watch what power we can unleash. Our collective will, the unseen force that manifests and manipulates climatic pointers all around us, may yet tip the balance further…

These forms began as a way to dry wood before using it in our home wood stove. Through forming sculptural stacks around our home we enjoy our place in the landscape, moving between the built environment and the natural. Like fungi in the paddocks, the stacks build up through the summer, and gradually dwindle away through the long winter months.
